Over 600 camera systems using Extreme CCTV infrared
technology have been installed in central London in an
attempt to reduce traffic congestion in the downtown core of
the city.
The cameras are mounted on "CCTV Trees" at more
than 160 entrance points around a 21 square kilometre
perimeter of the overcrowded city centre.
The system, instigated by The Mayor of London and known
as TFL (Transport for London), uses a combination of
cameras and IR (infrared) illuminators in order to capture
license plate numbers.
Drivers entering into the fare zone
will be subject to a £5 a-day charge that
can be paid at numerous convenience stores, parking
garages.
If the toll is not paid by midnight, a large fine is levied.
Despite many naysayers who insisted such a project would
be impossible to introduce, the launching of the TFL scheme
on February 17th seems to have gone off without a hitch.
Extreme CCTV's Jack Gin, CEO and Tony Whiting,
Managing Director (UK division) were in London to monitor
TFL's inaugural day.
